RED HILL HERITAGE TRAIN SHELTER
STATUS: COMPLETED 2024
LOCATION: RED HILL, VIC
A replica of the 1921 built station on the train line that is now the Red Hill Rail trail walking track which once provide a vital link between communities until the rise of the motor car led to the eventual decommisioning of the infrastructure.
Julian was approached by the Red Hill Community Association (RHCA) in 2020 to initialise the research and design of the station/shelter interpreting old photographs and visiting similar, period stations in the area to establish types and sizing of building materials typical to the typology.
Constructed by Croft Wooton builders, the project has subsequently won a Heritage Award. The following exerpt is from the RHCA website:
"An interpretive Red Hill Railway station platform and shelter have now been constructed in the same location as the original built for the 1921 opening, on the Red Hill to Merricks rail trail at the rear of the former Blue Moon Trading.
The works celebrate our history and are an exciting tribute to Red Hill's past railway journey. It is part of the planned stage 2 re-development of the Red Hill Station Reserve funded by a Mornington Peninsula Shire grant.
Along with a new station platform there is Red Hill station signage, fencing and an interpretive platform shelter. The shelter has the same corrugated iron roof and some weatherboard sides although it will not be identical and will feature information panels reflecting the remarkable history and acknowledging those involved in the construction of the line, the workers and engineers, and the Red Hill and Main Ridge farmers reliant on the service. It also has seating that looks out to the adjacent bushland reserve on one side and the Red Hill bike skills park on the other side.
The Red Hill Railway station sign (RED HILL) was crafted by the Main Ridge Men's Shed."
